What is Griz's Place All About?

I'm a musician. I make my own music, and I play other people's music. That's what this site is about. It's about you and I sharing music and everything about music.

That's a tall order. Music is a big, big world full of songs and words and people and opinions. I'm just trying to carve out my own little piece of the musical landscape and attract like-minded folks to inhabit it with me.

Okay, enough of the vague picturesque bullcrap before the violins start playing. Well, one more vague, picturesque meadow muffin: the music industry is a forty billion with a Bee dollar a year industry. There are now four major record labels and a similar number of distributors and retailers that have 99.999% of that sewn up tighter than your virgin aunt's kiester. Back in the days of MP3.com, there were over 100,000 artists posting original music on that site. Today, in the MySpace.com era there's probably a lot more than that.

Those big record labels release maybe a few hundred artists' work per year. New artists? How many can you think of from recently that have gone big? Meanwhile, the other 999,990 or so musicians in the world are working day jobs because we can't make a living wage as a musician.

The internet is changing all this. It gives musicians an avenue for exposure that the big business labels can't control. That's another thing this site is about: an attempt to do what I can for myself and other musicians to try bring the music industry out of the feudal age and get us a slice of the $40 billion pie.

This web site performs a lot of the functions that musicians often found it hard to do on their own in the past. We used to have to make demo tapes, usually crappy stereo tapes of live performances so prospective employers could hear whether you sucked or not. We used to have to make press kits with a pretty folder and professional looking pictures, a bio, song lists, and other things. Now we can put all that out here on the intertubes and hand you a business card and you can look at this stuff at your leisure. Also, I can put a lot more info up here that I could in the press kit. If your interested you can find out more about me and my music, and if you're not, you don't have an expensive pile of papers to roundfile.

And I can put info up here not just for people that want to hire me, but for people that want to listen as well. I'm so goddam excited about this I might wet my pants.

Now, through the magic of the internet, I can be all that I am to everyone. I have many musical facets. I used to have to make a demo tape for each club that played a different kind of music. The rock clubs didn't want to hear the country demos, and the country bars didn't want to hear the blues tunes. Now it's ala carte! You just click what you want and here it comes.

It's not just about the music either, but about the technology that's used to get to this online point. There are recording technologies and web development technologies, new sound equipment and advanced instruments to talk about. Things are changing fast in the world of musical gear, and we all need to keep up.

And finally, the man said, "opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one." I've got some opinions, and I may share them from time to time. If you're not interested, you don't have to listen, and I don't have to care. It's a win win situation!

But enough about that, let's move on to how the site is layed out...
