It’s a semi-true story, believe it or not
I made up a few things and there’s some I forgot
But the life and the telling are both real to me
And they all run together and turn out to be a semi-true story
- Mac Macanally
No, my Momma didn’t name me Griz. She named me Daniel. I kinda like that name and it’s a good thing because I hear it a lot, especially when I’m in trouble.
Back in the very early ‘80s I spent a few months living as a homeless drunk in the woods in Montana. I rarely shaved so my beard got pretty long, and I wore a wide brimmed cowboy sorta hat of the style that was popular in a bygone decade. I looked the part.
One of my friends started jokingly calling me Grizzly Adams. He eventually shortened it to Griz, and others whom I didn’t already know heard him calling me that and they called me that too.
In the intervening years, I have tried to live up to the name and spend as much time as I can camping and hiking. I have backpacked and camped in the Sierra Nevada, as well as Yellowstone, the Tetons, and various areas in Montana. I have stood on the top of Half Dome in Yosemite, and I have sustained an attack by hungry Raccoons in Big Sur.
That’s how I remember it, anyway.
